Luongo saves day for Canucks

Byron Ritchie notched his first goal of the season against his former team, Roberto Luongo made 35 saves and the Vancouver Canucks hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. Scoreless after the first period, Vancouver took control in the second, scoring three times in less than six minutes. Brendan Morrison opened the scoring on a power play at 2:32, neatly completing a tic-tac-toe passing play with Henrik and Daniel Sedin.

Lindros retires after 13 NHL seasons

Former NHL MVP Eric Lindros officially announced his retirement on Thursday in his hometown in Ontario. He scored 372 goals and had 865 points and 1,398 penalty minutes in 760 games for Philadelphia, Toronto, the New York Rangers and Dallas. He won the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 1995 and was part of the Canadian Olympic team that won gold in 2002. He also won silver for Canada at the 1992 games.

Pelley, Zubrus score 1st goals in win

Veteran Dainius Zubrus and rookie Rodney Pelley scored their first goals of the season in a three-goal flurry to help the New Jersey Devils beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Thursday night. Zubrus and Brian Gionta scored within 18 seconds of each other in the first period after spotting Philadelphia a 1-0 lead, and Zubrus scored again late in the period to give New Jersey a 3-1 lead. Pelley's first NHL goal early in the second period sent Flyers goaltender Martin Biron to the bench.

O’Brien’s two goals lead Tampa to easy win

Shane O'Brien scored two goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first road victory of the season, 5-1 over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Vincent Lecavalier, Filip Kuba and Vaclav Prospal each scored for the Lightning, who were 0-7 away from home this season. Prospal and Michel Ouellet added two early assists as Tampa Bay won consecutive games following a six-game losing streak.

Johnson day to day with fractured foot

St. Louis Blues rookie defenseman Erik Johnson is day to day with a hairline fracture of his right foot, the team said Wednesday. Johnson, the first overall pick of the 2006 draft, was evaluated by team physician Dr. Rick Wright on Tuesday. The Blues recalled defenseman Micki DuPont from Peoria, Ill., of the American Hockey League. DuPont, 27, played in two preseason games for St. Louis. He had been assigned to Peoria on Monday, returning because of the Johnson injury.

Seven different ‘Canes score in rout

Matt Cullen scored for the first time since returning to the Hurricanes, and six others added goals in Carolina's 7-1 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Cullen, traded back to Carolina during the summer after one season with the New York Rangers, scored a power-play goal that gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead in the second period. Justin Williams, Cory Stillman, Ray Whitney, Scott Walker, Jeff Hamilton and Eric Staal also scored against goalie Vesa Toskala.
