Coaches have said he would almost certainly not play this Sunday against Denver. A Denver television station reported earlier this week that Johnson has a broken foot and is out for the year.

David Carr practiced again Thursday, but Carolina coach John Fox still held off naming him the starting quarterback ahead of Vinny Testaverde for Sunday's game against Indianapolis. Fox said Carr, who has been slowed by a compression fracture in his lower back, responded well to consecutive practices. "He's looked good. I thought he had a good practice today," Fox said. "He didn't have any setbacks." Fox has said Carr will play if he's healthy.

The struggling Rams could get a boost from the return of Steven Jackson after the running back practiced Wednesday. Coach Scott Linehan said that unless he suffers a setback during the week, Jackson will be on the field when the winless Rams host Cleveland (3-3) on Sunday. Jackson expects to be back without limitations after missing four games with a partially torn groin. "The groin is something, it feels good one day and the next day you may have a little tweak to it," Jackson said.
