The Twenty-Five Most Underrated Guitarists

Posted by blackhat on October 1st, 2007
Statistics show that the average rock fan spends roughly 4.7 hours per year arguing over who’s the greatest guitarist of all time. We asked you who’s most criminally left out of those discussions — in other words, who are the most underrated guitarists ever? Here are the results: 1. Prince 2. Kurt Cobain 3. Neil Young 4. George Harrison 5. Ace Frehley 6. Mike McCready 7. Lindsey Buckingham 8. Mick Taylor 9. Nels Cline 10. Johnny Greenwood 11. Tom Verlaine 12. Carrie Brownstein 13. Mick Jones 14. Robert Fripp 15. Johnny Marr 16. John Frusciante 17. Izzy Stradlin 18. Daniel Johns 19. Vernon Reid 20. Robbie Robertson 21. Mick Ronson 22. Billy Corgan 23. Elliott Smith 24. Eddie Hazel 25. Phil Keaggy

I’ll add a couple.
Travis Meeks (Days of the New)
Jeff Martin (Tea Party)
I like those alternate tuning types.

Great List. Prince for sure. I just wish he’s play a normal looking guitar. But then again. That wouldn’t be very Prince-like.

Kurt Cobain, ugh. Somehow shooting yourself in the face makes misfretted powerchords “good”.

Good call on Travis Meeks. I haven’t listened to Days of the New in a few years, but I love em, gonna have to listen to them today.

Let’s not forget David Byrne, California Guitar Trio, Trevor Rabin and Daryl Stuermer.

Where is Steve Hackett, Allan Holdsworth, Andy Summers, and David Rhodes? They are most certainly among the top without question. And Ace Frehley? Frehley is not underrated, as he his influence is pretty substantial, but his technical ability is a bit below average.

Todd Rundgren and Joni Mitchell

ROBERT FRIPP SURELY

I’d go a little higher with Fripp and Keaggy, considerably lower with Ace.

Kurt Cobain was an allright song writer, but not a good guitar player. I vote you replace him with J Mascis

You’re right with Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Ronson and -especialliy- Robert Fripp. What about Marc Ribot?

Alex Lifeson isn’t #1?

David Gilmour
Adrian Belew
Bob Mould
Jake Cinninger (Umphrey’s McGee)

Kurt Cobain is in the top 5 of every list. Didn’t you know that? It’s actually required by law. There was a list of the Top 100 R&B Singers and there was Cobain at #3, right behind Wilson Pickett but ahead of Marvin Gaye.
Most underrated guitarist of all time: Robby Krieger.

I think the second Days of the New album is amazing. The third is pretty stellar too. I hope to have Travis on my radio show sometime soon. I’ll post here and let you know if it comes off.

The thing about lists such as these. Someone will always be left out in someone’s mind.

I agree with having Kurt on the list. Technique may have been lacking, but he did make one hell of a noise. He made a mark. That’s the point I believe.

Steve Wilson!

where’s tomas haugen and vegard tveitan, who were recently interviewed at length by guitar world magazine and who both are finally getting some recognition, or esa holopainen?

as it was said earlier, not everyone can be pleased. this was just a broad “top 25″. we could go into aspects of guitar playing and really break it down for who has the top 25 solos, or who are the top 25 speed players or who has the top 25 best technical skills. guitar is so diverse its hard to put together a list of only 25 that satisfies everyone.

George Harrison, Robert Fripp & Mick Taylor are the only musicians listed on this list. George Harrison and Robert Fripp are severely underated. Two of the world’s innovators.

Jeff Buckley NOT there?! …Corgan there… and yeah, Prince owns.

Adam Jones, Snakefinger, Steven Wilson, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore

Remember Chris Spedding, of course Fripp and Belew, and McLaughlin has also had his moments. Leo Kottke should not be overlooked. I agree that Mick Taylor should be on the list. I am truly amazed, however, that nobody has mentioned Hendrix!

Hendrix, underrated? quick! someone get this guy a recording of Woodstock!

> too doggone bad ..
the all-too-vast majority of you hepcats and wisebloggers
have no clue to the mighty blues/folk and other guitar traditions and stylings of the legendary Chicago guitarman:
MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD it’s a goddam SHAME, man.. .. ..

Got something to say? Then say it!
