Staal’s goal gives Rangers win

Rangers defenseman Marc Staal fired a shot in off the right post with 1:11 left in the third period to give New York a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. The final preseason game for both teams had a rough edge to it as the clubs combined for 31 penalties and several fights. Brandon Dubinsky and Nigel Dawes also scored for the Rangers (3-2-1). Mike Richards and Simon Gagne had goals for Philadelphia (3-5).

NHL suspends Flyers’ Downie 20 games

Flyers rookie Steve Downie was suspended 20 games by the NHL on Friday for his hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond that gave the center a concussion. McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher in the second period of Tuesday's preseason game. Downie received a match penalty and was automatically suspended until Friday's hearing. Downie has not played an NHL game with the Flyers and was expected to start the season in the minor leagues.

Madison Square Garden sues NHL

Madison Square Garden sued the NHL on Friday, saying the league has monopolized promotion of its teams. According to the lawsuit, the NHL has claimed it will fine MSG, which owns the New York Rangers, $100,000 per day if it does not give the NHL complete control over the team's Web site and other promotions. MSG said it had no choice but to bring the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan because the fines were scheduled to begin Friday.

Father, son ace same hole … in same group

Like father, like son. Two swings, two holes-in-one. When Trevor Jones aced the 118-meter (128-yard) 10th hole at Auckland's Waitemata Golf Club recently, his son Mark followed suit. The Joneses were playing in the same, four-man group when the 68-year-old Trevor's tee shot at the par-3 hole rolled out of sight and appeared to drop into the cup, the New Zealand Herald reported. Mark, 39, wasn't sure his father had made the hole-in-one, but said if he managed to do so, he would buy dinner.

Indiana bank suing Vick over car loans

An Indiana bank sued suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick for not repaying loans involving a car rental business. 1st Source Bank of South Bend said in a federal lawsuit it suffered damages of at least $2 million because Vick and Divine Seven LLC of Atlanta had refused to pay for the vehicles.The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Last week, the Royal Bank of Canada sued Vick in federal court in Virginia for more than $2.3 million that it said he had planned to use for real estate investments.

Love III needs ankle surgery, out 2 months

Davis Love III tore ligaments in his left ankle when he stepped in a hole playing golf and will miss at least two months after having surgery. Love withdrew earlier this week from the Viking Classic in Jackson, Miss. He plans to have surgery in seven to 10 days, his doctor said Friday. "An MRI proved that all the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are torn," Dr. Melvin Deese said. "Obviously, those ligaments are very significant for a golfer because they stabilize the foot during the swing.
