Pavin, Sluman around for the weekend

Henrik Nystrom shot a 2-under 68 Friday to tie Martin Kaymer and Sam Walker for the lead halfway through the Scandinavian Masters. Starting on the 10th, the Swede missed the chance to take the outright lead when he bogeyed the seventh and then parred his last two holes in the last group of the day on the wind-swept Arlandastad course. Kaymer (68), Walker (70) and Nystrom have 5-under 135 totals going into Saturday's third round.

NBA ref in betting probe: ‘I’m very sorry’

Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy isn't saying much about the betting scandal that brought him down and rocked the league, but he is saying sorry. "I'm very sorry about what happened," Donaghy told the Daily News on Thursday outside his home in Bradenton, Fla. "This is an ongoing case - I can't say anything else," he added. Donaghy pleaded guilty in a Brooklyn court Wednesday to felony charges for taking cash payoffs from gamblers and betting on games he officiated.

Former Heat forward pulled over April 9

Former Miami Heat player James Posey has agreed to plead guilty to reckless driving in connection with an incident in April on Miami Beach, prosecutors said Friday. Posey, who is unsigned, agreed to a deal involving lesser charges. He was originally arrested on drunken-driving charges after Miami Beach police pulled him over for stopping in the middle of a road April 9. Police said he was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech and his breath smelled of alcohol.

Tiger to miss first FedEx Cup playoff event

Tiger Woods will skip the first playoff event for the FedEx Cup, a setback for PGA Tour officials who promoted this as a "new era in golf" and a reminder to the public that majors are what matter most. Woods, the No. 1 seed when the PGA Tour Playoffs begin at The Barclays next week, said Friday he was tired from back-to-back victories in the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone and the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, which he won in 100-degree heat for his 13th major.

Radio log from NASCAR plane crash emerges

A pilot of a NASCAR plane was planning an emergency landing due to smoke in the cockpit seconds before communications cut off and the aircraft crashed, killing five people, a newspaper reported Friday. "Zero One November declaring an emergency. We need ... smoke in the cockpit ... we need to land at Sanford," said one of two men aboard the Cessna 310, according to a recording obtained by The Daytona Beach News-Journal. "Zero One November" refers to the plane's tail number. The man then said, "Zero One November, we're going to shut off all radios and elec..." before communications cut out, according to the recording obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Air traffic controllers in Orlando responded with "Roger, you can land any runway at Sanford. They know you're coming." It's not clear if the men, Michael Klemm and Dr. Bruce Kennedy, heard the response.

Grizzlies bring in Bartow as team president

Gene Bartow, a former coach at Memphis State and UCLA, was hired Thursday as president of Hoops LP, the company that operates the Memphis Grizzlies and their arena, the FedExForum. Bartow was chosen NCAA coach of the year in 1973 after leading the Tigers to the NCAA finals against powerhouse UCLA. Memphis State is now called the University of Memphis.
